A year since the government of national unity (GNU) came into being, South Africa’s ruling coalition is still struggling to find its groove. The alliance’s main achievement is that it has avoided collapse, but there have been near misses. The optimism that greeted the GNU’s formation has moderated as the difficulty of working together becomes more apparent.
